What an NPI lookup tells you

Every US healthcare provider that bills insurance has a National Provider Identifier. The NPI Registry is public, so anyone can check one.

Who the provider is
The individual’s name and credential, or the organization’s legal name. NPI-1 numbers belong to people, NPI-2 numbers to organizations.
What they practice
The primary taxonomy (specialty) code and description, with the state license number tied to it.
Where and whether
The practice location, phone number, and when the NPI was issued and last updated.

Need more than 20 a day?

Credentialing, claims and onboarding teams check NPIs in bulk. On the TrustLookup API an NPI lookup by number uses no credits on any plan, and you can upload a CSV of numbers to check them all at once. Name search is on this page only.

Questions

Is this NPI lookup free?

Yes. The NPI Registry is public data from CMS, and this page answers up to 20 searches a day without an account. On the API, NPI lookups by number use no credits.

How do I find a provider’s NPI by name?

Type the person’s first and last name, like Jane Smith, or the start of an organization’s name, like Mayo Clinic, and pick a state if the name is common. You’ll see up to 10 matches with their NPI, specialty and city. Open one to see the full record.

What’s the difference between NPI-1 and NPI-2?

NPI-1 (Type 1) numbers belong to individual providers such as doctors, nurses and therapists. NPI-2 (Type 2) numbers belong to organizations such as hospitals, clinics and group practices.

Why does a valid-looking NPI come back as not found?

The 10th digit is a check digit, so we catch typos before the lookup. A number that passes the check but isn’t found was either never issued or has been deactivated.

How current is the data?

We ask the NPI Registry directly and reuse an answer for the same NPI for up to 7 days. Providers update their own records, so the registry is only as current as their last update, shown as “Last updated”.
